CCPU Rally at the Capitol

The entire Blacksheep Studios team was on hand to cover the CCPU rally at the California State Capitol. This was a HUGE event with over 3000 people attending. CCPU stands for Child Care Providers United and is a large organization that fights for the rights and fair treatment of child care providers. This group is looking to make sure that their concerns are heard by lawmakers in the government so they gathered all their members for enormous gathering. We were tasked with covering the event with photography and videography. Our entire team spread out to make sure we caught all the action from the day. The atmosphere was charged with tension and excitement… and we were right in the middle of all of it!

With such a huge event we had to show the size and scope of it as well as all the emotion from the participants. Shooting wide shots of all the people gathering was an important aspect of the day. I love shots where you can see the large buildings with the sea of yellow shirts all around. We were also able to capture some amazing shots of the crowd gathered around the capitol swing space - a building where many representatives have their offices. As event photographers, we were really on the move to make sure all the angels were captured.

When shooting tighter shots, the key is to make sure we capture emotion from the participants. We really wanted to get those moments when speakers were passionately fighting for their cause. In the above photo you can really how much the cause means to her. In order to get shots like these you have to have a lens that has a good amount of reach, then you have to wait for just the right moment to hit the shutter button. It takes some patience and waiting for just the right moment in order to get exactly what you want.

Here’s the photo in front of the capitol swing space. The CCPU had a drum line accompany them as they walked the streets of Sacramento. It was very loud with the drums going on as well as people on their megaphones shouting. All of us were right in the middle of it listening to the beat of the drums and being a part of the large crowd. It’s not easy navigating through a sea of people like this, but as a photographer you have to just assert yourself and get to the spots you need to get to. I never stayed in a spot for too long because I wanted to make sure we had a variety of different photos from different vantage points.

It was a full day at the capitol for this event, but we were so honored to be a part of it. We were able to send off all our photos to CCPU the next day so that they could get coverage of the event out on their social networks. Blacksheep Studios prides itself on speedily getting the content you need back to you in the fastest possible way. Please let us know if you would like any sort of photography or videography done for yourself or your group. We’re here to serve!
