Burnice & Lekkyes Engagement

Burnice and Lekkyes were asking about good engagement session locations and I remembered how much I liked Sailor Bar, so I recommended the location to them. We met up there and it was a gorgeous day to have an engagement shoot. The weather wasn’t too hot and the golden fields were beautiful. We had the entire area to ourselves today so we took advantage of utilizing all the location had to offer!

Today I brought my lighting equipment to the location because shooting darker skin sometimes requires it. Professional lighting also adds more contrast to the photos and gives the photos a more polished look. The disadvantage of shooting with a lighting set-up is that the images tend to be a little less spontaneous and changing locations means moving the lighting around all the time. For our shoot today I decided to begin with the lighting set-up and then move off it if I felt the photos would turn out well. The photo above was shot with the lighting set-up. You can really see the faces illuminated nicely because of it.

Sailor Bar has a lot of rolling hills, and Burnice and Lekkyes wanted to shoot some shots where Burnice would be picked up. Looking around I found an amazing spot at the top of one of the hills. It would have been time consuming to lug all the lighting up the hill so I left it where it was and decided to shoot the rest of the session in natural light. Natural light photos are beautiful because of the the softness of the final image. It can require more work in post to get the image to look really good, but when it’s right… it looks great!

After Sailor Bar we moved to downtown Sacramento’s DOCO area. We didn’t have a lot of time to shoot here because it was getting late, but the quality of light at this time was amazing. As we walked through DOCO I noticed that the sunlight was reflecting off an art piece next to the Golden 1 Center. I chose to have Burnice and Lekkyes pose where the light was shining to capture some unique tones. When I’m out shooting, this is the kind of thing that I specialize in finding. As a photographer, chasing the best light is key, so it’s important to keep your eyes open for places to shoot.

This was one of the final images that we shot. It’s actually the “O” in DOCO. I reminded me of a ring so I thought it’d be great to showcase the two of them in the middle of it. The engagement session was great and I enjoyed it very much. I absolutely loved the images we were able to capture. Huge thanks to Burnice and Lekkyes for having me as their engagement photographer!
