Fam n’ Mat

Nate contacted me through Yelp and was looking to shoot some family photos. This is the time of year that a lot of families contact us for services so that they can get their holiday cards ready. He brought his wife as well as his two beautiful kids. I brought my Sony 50mm 1.2 G Master prime lens and we were off and shooting.

Nate was looking for a place with a nice grassy field area and I thought of the arboretum at Davis. There are many beautiful backdrops to shoot in front of there and this seemed to fit the bill very nicely. The kids loved the arboretum because of the many trees around. They both really wanted to go climbing - and of course they would… but only after all the photos were completed!

The kids had A LOT of energy (as kids do). Seeing this I knew we had to shoot fast so that they didn’t get too bored or impatient. This is definitely a strategy to keep in mind with children. I find that you cannot spend much time posing them and having them follow specific directions. It’s best to encourage quickly and make them laugh. When they do, get the shot and be done with it! Their natural smiles and laughing will always end up being the best photos.

Nate’s wife was expecting so we also decided to get a few maternity style shots in after the family ones. The scenery was perfect for maternity photos so we might as well take advantage of this situation. It was like getting two photo sessions for the price of one!

It was such a pleasure meeting Nate and his amazing family. I’m looking forward to another session with them closer to their new baby being born. Until then, I wish them the best!
