Johnson Family Photo Session

Sarah was looking to do some family portraits while she was in town as her family rarely gets together. Reunion shoots are a favorite of mine because often times families can be apart for years, and capturing great images of their special time together is priceless. We went out in the early morning to the California State Capitol Park to take advantage of the slightly cooler weather and great lighting. As with all my photo sessions, we walked around until I saw something inspiring that would look great in a photo. I particularly love this photo as the tree in the foreground frames the family perfectly.

It’s also very important to lighten the mood during photoshoots. Subjects just look better when they are relaxed and having fun. Often times taking photos can be a chore and I understand that many people don’t like getting photos taken. So I try to make it as fun of an experience that I can. In the photo above I had Sarah and her brother goof around a bit. It was a fun moment and the early morning light was just perfect on them as I got this shot.

I’ll often also have the family just talk and enjoy the moment a little while I step back with a telephoto lens to capture some of the fun conversations that they have with each other. The smiles and expressions that I get are genuine and show the love the family has for each other.

Sarah’s brother is the fun loving family member so I was able to capture many photos expressing that. The finished pictures are so much more fun to look at when they are unique to you. It was awesome that the Johnson family was able to just let loose and be expressive during our time together.
